Mount Carmel was a powerful experience. We read the story of Elijah and the prophets of Baal. The people of Israel had gone after false gods and Elijah showed up to call them all back to repentance. He challenged the prophets of Baal to call fire down from heaven to consume an offering... They could do nothing of course... Elijah prayed and fire came down from heaven and consumed offering ... water ... rocks and dirt.
The message is great for Advent... The offering that pleases the heart of our God is a broken and contrite heart that turns to him... Just as on Pentecost - Jesus accepts our repentant cries and causes the fire of God's Holy Spirit to come down consuming our sin for Jesus' sake and fills us with His forgiveness and power for living.
