12-10-2008 Home of Zachariah and Elizabeth

We traveled to the hill country of Judea that surrounds Jerusalem and visited the site where tradition says Zachariah and Elizabeth, the parents of John the Baptist lived. Into the ordinary life of a Priest and his barren wife comes the miraculous gift of the prophet John.

Luke begins his Gospel with news from the Angel who was sent from the throne of God to announce the coming of John in the spirit and power of Elijah to prepare the way of the Lord. It was also at Elizabeth’s home that Marry – who was pregnant with Jesus by the Holy Spirit fled for safety and peace. Elizabeth was prepared by her own outrageous miracle to receive Marry’s story and welcome her.

Luke 1:76-79 And you, my child, will be called a prophet of the Most High; for you will go on before the Lord to prepare the way for him, [77] to give his people the knowledge of salvation through the forgiveness of their sins, [78] because of the tender mercy of our God, by which the rising sun will come to us from heaven [79] to shine on those living in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the path of peace."
