For the pilgrim going to Jerusalem for one of the three main festivals, Passover, The Day of Atonement, or The Feast of Tabernacles ... there was always ascending to do as they approached Jerusalem. Jerusalem not only sits at about 1800 feet from sea level it is also the Spiritual center for the Jews ... the very throne of God in their minds. They ascend in there thinking on Spiritual things. As Paul said, Set your hearts on things above, not on earthly things.
Psalm 14:7 Oh, that salvation for Israel would come out of Zion! When the Lord restores the fortunes of his people, let Jacob rejoice and Israel be glad!
