The church of the Nativity in Bethlehem

The church of the Nativity is one of the oldest standing Christian churches. Helena the mother of Constantine founded the church in this spot after doing research to see where Jesus was born.

The church initially is really a turn-off. You go in and there are elaborate gold lamps and a ornate altars. Then you descend into a chamber below the altar in the church. There too you see ornate gold to mark the place where Jesus was born and another to mark the place were Jesus was laid. You are looking for the rustic … the stable … the animals … the smell… THE REAL THING. On the surface you don’t see it. But if you look hard enough … If you look at the walls covered and painted black with pitch you will see that you are in an old cave. If you look at God long enough you will see something as well … You will see that the greatest palace that could ever be built for the greatest King would look like a stinky animal cave compared to the GLORY of the Son of God who came down this earth to be our Savior. Think about it… this King longs to come into the stable of our heart as well. He wants to scrape away all the glitz and the glitter and get down to the REAL YOU. He comes AS YOU ARE to ultimately lift you up where he is. 2 Cor. 8:9
For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich.

O Little Town Of Bethlehem
O Holy Child of Bethlehem
Descend to us we pray
Cast out our sin and enter in
Be born in us today.
